Vizio anounced a September availability of its 55-inch 1080p/240Hz full-area LED backlit TV, model VF551XVT ($2,200 suggested retail).
Unlike competitors’ LED offerings, Vizio said this model uses 960 LEDs arranged in 80 cells to illuminate the full back area of the LCD screen. Vizio claims this technology will to reduce power consumption over traditional CCFL backlighting systems and will allow Vizio to incorporate Smart Dimming technology for better color saturation and improved contrast and black levels.

The 55″ Vizio LED/LCD seems like a bargain prior to any real world testing. (When I first started looking I felt I would get a 47″ unit with a 52″ unit possible.) Certainly it is priced lower than Samsung, LG & others. Published energy savings for LED/LCD vs Standard LCD seem siginificant. My sticking point has always been the overall size/ thickness & weight of larger screened sets. The LED/LCD’s that I have seen are VERY thin by comparison to std. LCD’s and show a significant weight reduction. Plasma seems on its way out but one review I saw noted that a Plasm vs /LED-LCD vs std. LCD side by side comparison had the plasma showing many more stars in a movie outerspace clip that the LCD’s missed–but seemingly detracting from the effect only if you knew the stars were there in the first place. Vizio’s LCD “cell” lighting vs edge lighting would logically seem to give a performance advantage to a lower priced set. Once thing I have noticed since the Vizio 55″ LED/LCD was first mentioned is an upward price creep, $100 at a time, which suggest that even a lower price leader is trying to maximize its profits. I think the LED/LCD will be so much better than the std. LCD that Vizio will either have to drop the standard 55″ LCD from its lineup or reduced the price significantly; something I have not seen indicated to be done yet. At this price level I would also hope that Vizio has enough confidence in the LED/LCD technology to include a longer warranty in the purchase price!
